Vinyl fence installation in Rapid City, SD

A fence you won't have to stain, built to handle cold snaps, sun and wind on the edge of the Black Hills.

Vinyl, also called PVC, is the go-to fence for people who don't want to paint or stain every few years. It comes in full privacy panels, semi-privacy designs that let some wind through, picket fences for the front yard and two- or three-rail styles for larger lots. It's especially common in newer subdivisions around Rapid City and Summerset.

Which vinyl style fits your yard?

How does vinyl hold up to South Dakota winters?

Vinyl stiffens in the cold and can crack if it's thin or takes a hard hit on a frigid day. Quality and installation are what separate a fence that lasts from one that doesn't. Ask about the wall thickness of posts and rails, whether posts get aluminum inserts or concrete fill, and how gates are reinforced against sag. Wind matters too: a long run of solid panels on an open lot sees serious load, so ask how the contractor plans post spacing.

Codes that apply to vinyl

Summerset's fence rules require PVC fences to meet listed ASTM standards and set posts in at least a cubic foot of concrete. Rapid City's height limits apply no matter what the fence is made of. HOAs in newer neighborhoods often specify color and style, so pull your covenants before you pick a panel.

Color and upkeep

White is the classic choice, but it shows red dirt and road spray. Tan, gray and wood-grain finishes hide it better. Upkeep is mostly a hose and mild soap once or twice a year.

Pricing comes from the contractor, after they've walked the line, looked at the grade and the soil, counted gates and heard what the fence has to do. We don't quote prices, and any figure given over the phone before someone sees the property is a rough guess at best.

Common questions

Does vinyl fence crack in the cold?

Thin, low-grade vinyl can get brittle and crack from impacts in winter. Heavier profiles and reinforced posts hold up much better.

Is vinyl allowed in Summerset?

Yes. Summerset's fence rules allow PVC that meets listed ASTM standards, with posts set in concrete. A city fence permit is still required.
