Ranch and acreage fencing around Rapid City, SD
Fences that hold horses and livestock and stay tight across long runs of prairie and foothill ground.
Step outside Rapid City in almost any direction and lots get bigger fast. South toward Hermosa, east toward Box Elder and New Underwood, and in the foothills west of town, people keep horses, a few head of cattle, goats or chickens, and need fence that actually holds them.
Which fence fits which animal?
| Fence | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood or vinyl rail | Horses, front pastures, a ranch-style frontage | Very visible to horses; add mesh for small animals |
| Steel pipe | Corrals, arenas, heavy-use pens | Strong and long-lived |
| Woven wire | Sheep, goats, dogs | Needs tight bracing to stay taut |
| Smooth or barbed wire | Cattle on acreage | Barbed wire isn't allowed in Rapid City's residential districts |
| Tall woven wire | Keeping deer out of gardens and orchards | Check height limits in town |
Why corners and braces matter
On a long wire fence, the line posts just hold the wire up. The corner and gate assemblies, usually H-braces, take the tension. If they move, the whole fence goes slack. Ask how corners and gates will be braced and how far apart line posts will be on your ground.
Rocky ground and long lines
Foothill properties often hit rock a foot or two down, while lower ground can be heavy clay that holds water. Contractors handle that with different post types and setting methods, so let them walk the whole route. Long fence lines also cross buried lines more often. South Dakota 811 marks utility lines for free with two working days' notice; private lines to a barn, well or stock tank are on you to point out.
Electric fence
A hot wire is common for horses and cattle outside town. Inside Rapid City, the code limits electric fences to general agricultural and airport districts and requires a listed controller. In the county, check zoning and covenants.
Pricing comes from the contractor, after they've walked the line, looked at the grade and the soil, counted gates and heard what the fence has to do. We don't quote prices, and any figure given over the phone before someone sees the property is a rough guess at best.

Common questions
Can I put up an electric fence for horses near Rapid City?
Inside city limits, only in general agricultural and airport districts, with a listed controller. Outside the city, check county zoning and covenants.
Will 811 mark the water line to my barn?
Usually not. South Dakota 811 notifies utilities, which mark their own lines. Private lines past the meter are the owner's to locate.
