Fence installation in Summerset, South Dakota
Privacy, vinyl and dog fences for one of the newest cities in the state, which permits every fence.
Summerset is a small city in Meade County, just west of I-90 between Black Hawk and Piedmont, with 2,972 residents at the 2020 census. It incorporated in 2005, the first new city in South Dakota in two decades, and most of its homes are relatively new.
What Summerset properties need
- First fences for newer homes, usually vinyl or cedar privacy
- Dog fences and side yard gates
- Rail fences on larger lots at the edges of town
Every fence needs a permit
Summerset requires a city fence permit for all fence installation, with a $50 fee, and contractors must hold a Summerset license before work begins. Residential fences can't exceed 6 feet. The application asks for a map showing property lines, buildings and exactly where the fence will go.
Placement rules worth knowing
The fence has to sit entirely on your property unless your neighbor agrees in writing. Fences aren't allowed in major drainage easements, must stay out of rights-of-way and at least 2 feet from sidewalks, and can't block drainage to the lot next door. On interior lots, opaque fences over 3 feet 6 inches aren't allowed in the first 25 feet of the required front yard. In Sun Valley, fences must stay at least 12½ feet from the Williston Basin Pipeline easement.
How posts have to be set
The city's rules space posts no more than 8 feet apart. Wood posts go at least 3 feet into the ground, or 2 feet in a cubic foot of concrete; metal and vinyl posts are set in concrete.
