Fence repair and gates in Rapid City, SD

Fix what's broken, rehang what sags, and only replace what's really done.

A fence with sound posts can usually be repaired for less than replacing it. The first thing a contractor checks is the posts: whether they're rotted at the ground, heaved by frost, or just loosened by wind.

What can be repaired?

  • Rotted or broken posts, replaced or braced with steel post repair brackets
  • Sections blown over or racked by wind
  • Split, cupped or missing boards and pickets
  • Bent chain link from a fallen branch or a car, and loose tension bands
  • Sagging wire and loose corner braces on acreage
  • Vinyl panels that popped out of their rails

When is replacement the better deal?

If most of the posts are soft at the ground line, the whole run leans, or boards are failing everywhere, patching one section just moves the problem down the line. A contractor can tell you honestly which side of that line your fence is on.

Why do gates sag?

  • The hinge post is undersized, too shallow or leaning
  • The frame has no diagonal brace, or the brace runs the wrong direction
  • Hinges too light for the gate
  • Wood joints loosened as the boards dried and shrank
  • Snow piled against the gate all winter

Many sagging gates can be fixed with a new hinge post, an anti-sag cable, heavier hinges or a rebuilt frame. A rotted gate is usually replaced.

New gates

Walk gates for mowers and wheelbarrows, double drive gates for a trailer or camper into the side yard, and steel ranch gates for equipment. Ask for a latch you can work with gloves on, enough clearance for snow, and a drop rod on double gates to hold the inactive leaf.

After a windstorm

Keep pets and livestock away from loose boards, nails and wire, and photograph the damage before cleanup if you plan to file a claim. If posts need to be reset in new holes, whoever digs should file a South Dakota 811 locate first.

Pricing comes from the contractor, after they've walked the line, looked at the grade and the soil, counted gates and heard what the fence has to do. We don't quote prices, and any figure given over the phone before someone sees the property is a rough guess at best.

Common questions

Can heaved posts be reset?

Often. A contractor can pull and reset posts deeper, or replace them, as long as the rails and boards are still in good shape.

Can a sagging gate be fixed without a new one?

Usually, if the gate itself is sound. A new hinge post, brace, anti-sag kit or heavier hinges fix most sag.
